Bill “Junior” Gunnell graduated from Central HS, class of 1956 where he was a standout tackle and fullback in football and exhibited exceptional skills in baseball. He played semi-pro baseball as a catcher for the Spartans and semi-pro football as a tackle for Pope’s Inn. Junior became a supervisor at TICO, now known as Columbus Boy’s Ranch. For a great many years he was a supervisor at the Columbus Boy’s Club, Milo- Grogan Branch where he flourished in coaching multiple sports, especially basketball, baseball and football. He had a special connection with young people, mentoring to many young men in the north end and surrounding areas and turning every team he coached into winners. Coaching was Junior’s calling.
